Spike Lee has not had the best directorial track record lately with 2013’s failed Oldboy remake. He might be finding his way back, however, with his crowdfunded Da Sweet Blood of Jesus which was released on Vimeo VOD yesterday. Da Sweet Blood of Jesus isn’t set for a theatrical release until February 13, but the film will be available on Vimeo VOD a whole month before. In the past year, some films have opted for a VOD or Netflix streaming release at the same time as a theatrical release, but very few films have premiered on VOD before a theatrical release. Supposedly, the film is about a curse that leaves a person with a thirst for blood, but it is not a “vampire” movie. In fact, Cronos was del Toro’s first feature film, unleashed on the world over 20 years ago, way back in 1993. Federico Luppi stars as Jesus Gris, an antiques dealer who discovers a strange clockwork contraption inside the hollowed-out base of an angel statue. Things take an unsettling turn when, after tinkering with the contraption, it suddenly unfolds into an insect-like configuration, jabbing him with a needle and injecting some sort of liquid. That’s the sort of crazy shit that would send most people fleeing to the emergency room, but Jesus actually starts feeling better soon… better than ever, actually. His wrinkles are smoothing out, his hair is coming back, even his sex drive is surging. Night Watch introduces a secret world existing in the shadows of our own, where a centuries-old battle between good and evil has settled into a stalemate of sorts. Now the opposing forces of the Night Watch and Day Watch guard both the bright and the twilight hours, ensuring neither side becomes too powerful. But that precarious status quo is threatened by a young boy, whom prophecy suggests could shift the balance of power in favor of the darkness or the Watch was a massive hit in Russia, at the time becoming the highest-grossing Russian release of all time. Fox Searchlight eventually snagged the American release rights, bringing it stateside in 2006. Unlike in the rest of the films on this list, vampires are only one part of a much larger paranormal landscape in Night Watch, but they serve as some of the primary forces of darkness here. Director Bekmambetov fills the screen to bursting with the propulsive, adrenaline-soaked style on display in his other films, and even the subtitles are handled in unique and creative ways. When he meets Eli, the new girl next door, Oskar finally discovers a kindred spirit, another outsider who doesn’t seem to vibrate at the same frequency as the rest of the world. It goes well beyond that, Oskar eventually discovers Eli has both a terrible secret and a very particular set of dietary requirements, and a series of nearby murders soon threaten to throw Eli’s secrets into the searing light of has been exploiting the inherently creepy nature of children for decades, from The Shining to The Ring. The outstanding 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In makes you care about the little demon many other flicks would have just used to frighten, but without ever downplaying the child’s violent and horrific nature—most notably during the film’s brilliant climactic swimming pool sequence. Everything in the film is anchored by the genuinely affecting friendship between Oskar and Eli Kare Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson, both sublime. Let the Right One In reminds viewers that, even in a world of nocturnal bloodsuckers, the worst monsters are often of the human variety, and kindness can sometimes be found in the darkest of corners. It’s worth noting that the American remake, Let Me In, actually does the original justice, thanks to solid direction by Matt Reeves and the twin performances of Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Grace Moretz.4 Afflicted Hulu with ShowtimeBuddies Clif and Derek co-directors Clif Prowse and Derek Lee have been traveling the world for years, filming their adventures as part of a webseries called Ends of the Earth. That tradition looks to be in peril after Derek is diagnosed with a condition that means he could literally drop dead at any moment. Determined not to let the bad news defeat him, Derek talks Clif into accompanying him on one last hurrah a trip to Europe. Once there, Derek hits it off with a beautiful, mysterious girl, and the two go to bed together. The next morning, Clif discovers Derek in his hotel room bleeding, banged-up, and with no memory of what happened the night before. The two continue their journey, but Derek soon begins acting strangely, becoming skittish around daylight and reacting violently to food. You can probably guess where this is headed. As Derek continues changing, Clif tries to track down the girl, hoping to find answers about what’s happening to his the found-footage trend having taken the horror field by storm over the past decade or so, it was just a matter of time until somebody got around to making a vampire version, and Afflicted is as good a combination of those two things as you could hope for. Afflicted is best seen with as little foreknowledge as possible, but, well, there’s not really any way to include it on this list without giving part of the game away. Still, there’s plenty to love about Afflicted beyond the twist. The arc of the film’s infection is a fascinating descent, with the formerly at-death’s-door Derek now leaping tall buildings and outpacing motorbikes in a way that seems right out of your typical superhero origin story—only for things to soon begin spiraling ever Afflicted is only available to Hulu customers who have also signed up for the streaming service’s new partnership with Showtime, which costs an extra $ per via Movieclips Coming Soon/YouTube

Spike Lee followed 2013’s underwhelming Oldboy with a far more engaging reworking of a cult classic. In Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Lee updates Bill Gunn’s Ganja and Hess – an expressionistic vampire feature which uses its horror trappings as a way to reflect on deeper socio-political concerns of black identity, cultural imperialism and the place of religion in 1970s America. This is, then, prime material for Lee, and although Da Sweet Blood of Jesus sticks closely to the plot, characterization, and dialogue of Gunn’s original, the filmmaker finds a way to put his own distinct spin on the source material. The personal stamp is evident from its very first moment, an intoxicating montage comprised of shots of the street dancer Lil Buck Jooks languidly breakdancing across a series of Brooklyn locations to Bruce Hornsby’s soft, melancholy string score. The sequence self-consciously recalls the iconic opening scene of Do the Right Thing, although Rosie Perez’s defiant, exuberant movements have been replaced by a register that is more gentle and resigned. The street dynamic street tableaux form a kind of mini-travelogue which captures, in only 3 minutes, Lee’s New York in microcosm a Knicks-branded basketball court; a housing project in development; an alleyway marked with graffiti; Red Hook church; and a picturesque riverfront from which the Statue of Liberty can faintly be seen in the far distance. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful scene, simultaneously reflecting on Lee’s artistic legacy, the history of his hometown, and the persistence of racial inequality. This is, then, clearly a late-period work, then, and, although Lee’s sense of hope for the establishment of a fairer society can never be fully extinguished, a sense of deep melancholy infuses every moment of Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. It is difficult to not detect a note of self-implication in Lee’s portrayal of Dr. Hess Green, a moneyed African-American art historian who struggles to balance his desire to remain true to his cultural roots with the pressure to assimilate into the codes of white elitist society which is an integral part of being rich in the United States. To be wealthy, for Hess, means having the cultural position to preserve countless priceless African artifacts, but it also means profiting from the capital of a country built on the systematic exploitation of blacks, and which continues to accrue wealth through the structural marginalization of minorities. In an early scene, Hess warns a black co-worker not to visit him at home unannounced, as he is the only non-white living in Martha’s Vineyard, and their meeting may arouse paranoia in his neighbours. Regrettably, Hess is often put in the position of presenting his collection of artifacts to a white audience who view them as nothing more than decorative consumer objects. America is, as Hess describes it, a “blood society”, in which the privileged parasitically profit from the suffering of those less fortunate. This metaphor is literalized when his unstable co-worker Hightower stabs him with a cursed Ashanti blade, forcing upon Hess an insatiable appetite for blood. At first, Hess tries to satiate this desire through peaceful means – stealing sacks from a blood bank and feeding off the corpses of men who have died in other circumstances – but soon his more predatory drives take over, and he begins to prey on living victims; his targets are predominantly female, black and belonging to a lower economic class. In contrast to the formal hysterics of Gunn’s original, the tone of Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is eerily placid. It is composed of elegant, wide-screen images which project a consistent sense of grace that is at odds with the often grotesque violence on display; the vibrant, sunlit colour palette – awash with golds, searing reds, and light blues – is a far cry from the murky, under-lit tones of Gunn’s film. This surface calm is expressive of the bubble of privilege that Hess’ wealth has built up around him, allowing him to exploit society’s have-nots while remaining fundamentally alienated from their experience. Lee has also replaced the crumbling Victorian castle of Ganja and Hess with a chintzy beachside villa, a modernist spectacle constructed mostly out of glass walls and faux-marble surfaces. Hess has covered the place with African objet d’art, as if straining to feign off the effects of gentrification and provide a concrete link to his heritage. Lee’s Hess is less a ravenous monster than a pained, aloof, distant man unable to reconcile his personal morality with his vices; be that blood, sex, alcohol, or luxury commodities. Hess’ hermetic isolation is interrupted when the deceased Hightower’s wife, Ganja, arrives at the mansion looking for her husband, but, instead falls into Hess’ arms. The two begin a passionate love affair which soon sees them both descend into bloodlust, and it is these scenes that Lee demonstrates his often-overlook aptitude for tender eroticism. Lee compliments the rhythm of the images with a remarkably rich aural texture, combining Hornsby’s mesmerizing score with a soundtrack that encompasses minimalist hip-hop, industrial rock and neo-soul. Lee carefully compiled the songs from an online open call for unsigned musicians, part of a wider ambition to produce as much of the movie outside the confines of the studio system as possible, which included a very public Kickstarter campaign to raise the meager $ million budget. The shoestring nature of its production may lend Da Sweet Blood of Jesus the appearance of a minor work, but, under closer inspection, it reveals itself to be one of the richest and most experimental works in the recent filmography of one of our greatest living auteurs. For over two decades, Lee, unfortunately, failed to receive the critical or commercial attention that greeted the release of his earlier canonical masterworks like Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X. Hopefully the phenomenal success of BlackKklansman last year will inspire a wider re-appraisal of unjustly maligned works like Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Chi-Raq, and Red Hook Summer.

Here, compulsions that plague the real world are viewed through the lens of one that only haunts our pop culture Though Lee doesn’t like to call his protagonists vampires, they are undead, crucifix-averse creatures addicted to drinking human blood. Their story, which mostly unfolds on a luxe, windswept Martha’s Vineyard estate, hews to genre conventions even less than Only Lovers Left Alive, the recent vampire tale by Lee’s contemporary Jim Jarmusch, and the picture can expect almost zero support from horror buffs. Yet it is gory enough to alienate more mainstream audiences as well, and its sexualized take on the material elicited some snickers even from this highly sympathetic festival crowd. Lee says that he hasn’t seen Gunn’s original film in years, but whether by design or coincidence, Sweet Blood easily conjures the airless, alternate-reality feel of certain low-budget ’70s indies; its mannered performances and self-conscious monologues feel like nothing in contemporary cinema. They pair oddly with Bruce Hornsbys wistful, wholesome score, which encourages us to expect a moral message that never really materializes As allegory, the picture requires viewers to connect most of the dots without assistance, offering a preachy bit of dialogue once or twice but failing to use action or the camera to say much about non-sanguinary addictions. By comparison, Jarmusch required only a few shots of glassed-over eyes and blissed-out levitation to link his hipster bloodsuckers’ pleasures to those pursued by heroin addicts.
